Why has common driving courtesy gone out of people’s mind?

August 5, 2009 by autoback

I have been driving for nearly 25 years and the driving courtesy to my mind as completely gone out of people's mind. The amount of people who do not use their indications for overtaking and then pulling back in.

I have seen instances where people can't even read the signs painted on the road.

E.G. Near where I live is a set of traffic lights, one lane for turning left, the other for going straight on and right.
On 2 separate instances a blonde female driving a Mercedes gets into the left-turn lane to go straight ahead.
Where in this woman's head is the safety aspect of what she is doing?
Roundabouts, junctions and overtaking where has the safety aspect of all those gone.

People who swing out in front of vehicles without indicating, than cut another vehicle up on the way back in without using indicators at all. Especially on Dual Carriageways where the driving speeds are a lot faster.

Roundabouts, where, when the exit required is reached, the left indicator is switched on. This is to inform drivers approaching the roundabout of the intended direction and they continue their journey.

There is a Health and Safety Advert that I've seen fairly recently that explains how use a roundabout and yet most people seem blind to the idea.

What does it take to use your indicator? 1 or 2 seconds.

Such a little amount of time to inform other people of your intent.

Such a little amount of time that could cause an accident and kill someone. Because that what it could lead to.

I know what that is like as a 4×4 nearly put me into the central reservation on a very busy M1, through not checking properly and just swinging across.

Multiple questions about becoming a commercial pilot?

August 5, 2009 by autoback

I am considering a career in being a commercial pilot. I just have some questions I need answered.

1. Do graduates from accelerated programs stand a good chance of eventually getting an airline job if they have a 4 year degree? Or do the airlines look down upon these programs?

2. If you are trying to get each rating yourself through private flight lessons, how are you supposed to get the required "cross country" hours in the cheapest and easiest manner?

3. If I wanted to take the military route, does having a private pilots license already increase my chances of getting accepted?

4. With a degree and a private pilots license, can I be certain of becoming a pilot if I get accepted into the USAF? Or could they get me to sign into a 10-year contract and then tell me I can't fly? If so is it likely to happen?

5. Would I be best getting a degree in Aviation or would that just encourage them to give me a maintenance position instead?

6. I heard that major airlines prefer to hire pilots with military experience, is this true?

7. If I get out of the USAF after 10 years and the industry isnt in a position to hire pilots into airlines, is it possible to go back into the air force so I can still work?

8. Another possible route is piloting private jets for businesses and wealthy people. I heard that having a B.S. in Aviation is desired so you can resolve technical problems as well as flying the aircraft, is this true?

9. I know approximately how much an air force officer and an airline pilot earn. But can I get a salary estimate for the following:

-Regional airline
-Private jets
-Major freight
-Fire service
-Prison transport
(and any other major choices in piloting)

I know its a lot of questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it ok to be a pilot in the next 6-8 years?

August 5, 2009 by autoback

I'm a junior in high school in the Philippines and I'm going to college soon. I really want to become a pilot. Can't imagine myself doing anything else in the future. I'm thinking of going to a decent flight school after college.Questions are:

-Is it hard to look for jobs or opportunities after flight school?
-Is it advisable to pursue my dream in the next 6-8 years with the economic crisis going on?
-Other stuff i need to know?
